This project taught me how to handle scope creep and the importance of clear communications to internal teams, as well as to the client.

The original scope was a flat branded microsite which grew into a much larger campaign that needed a whole website. This project involved multiple offices across different countries and another project manager. It was important to keep the internal teams motivated while also managing the client’s expectations.

As an online publishing company, we were accustomed to providing editorial content in a simple format so building whole website was a unique opportunity. The larger scope meant that I oversaw:

  • creating a custom CMS platform for the client, which involved in-depth technical discussions on both sides
  • expanding our editorial content, such as developing journal supplements
  • negotiating contracts with other editorial content providers for additional materials
  • extensive review process from the design mock-ups to content editing to beta-testing the website

This project taught me the importance of linking the Sales team with the Technical team so the entire company is aware of what the prospects are and how to manage the pipeline. It also brought home the importance of client customer service and maintaining a good relationship while managing expectations.
